What exactly does "Cloud Account" setting *do*??

I have never signed up for any kind of cloud service, even though many exist (Amazon, Apple, Google Drive, etc.).

What specifically does Tapatalk's "Cloud Account" setting actually *do*? What "cloud" is it referring to? I see no documentation on this anywhere.

Stores a list of forums and your username so that when you get a new phone you can easily get the whole list back on your phone

Hmm - where is this cloud account kept? I don't recall anywhere where I signed up for a "cloud account", provided a user name or password, etc.

If this is done automatically on Tapatalk's own servers, how is my information kept secure?

Done automatically. If you don't like it you can disable it in settings.

I too am curious about this. I don't mind it saving my accounts but I would however like more control over them.

Yes, that's what I'm wondering about - if my info is stored on a server (assuming I enable the feature), that would mean that my account name/email/password are stored in some form on Tapatalk's server. It could be some kind of one-way hash form, perhaps hashed with info that is keyed to the individual user's accounts, one per Tapatalk-using forum. That would be the most secure.

If it weren't a one-way hash, or if the hash key were maintained by Tapatalk, then that could conceivably allow malicious third parties access to all my forum accounts (unless the password is required for each account when I install Tapatalk on another device).

I can understand that the folks at Tapatalk might not want to reveal their security methods, because it could open them up to being hacked, but I definitely *would* like some kind of assurance from Tapatalk that all my forum accounts' security information is "unhackable" as much as is possible. :)

I'm coming from a background of being a software developer at many web-based businesses, and having to maintain secure account information, licenses, etc., so you can understand my concern.

I should add, also, that if I disable the 'cloud account' feature after it has been enabled, any identifying or secure information that Tapatalk has maintained will be immediately and permanently wiped.

Damn, having problems typing clearly - that is, if I disable... etc. etc. ... SHOULD be immediately and permanently wiped - and is it? :)

I completely understand where your coming from.

There is a thread where a user was seeing other people's accounts.

The way the cloud works is that it displays an account you have logged into and displays just the account and username... I believe in order for it to be functional you still need to login with your password and it will be moved from the cloud to your phone.

Ahhh... well, if your password is not stored, then that's good to know. I haven't ever used the feature (tho' probably will, because I just bought a new phone), so I hadn't seen if a password was required again or not. Thanks for the info!

What I want to see is the cloud features get eliminated for account import/export option that way you can save the file on your phone and import them at your leisure.

That would be my preference as well. It's a shame that people have to resort to Titanium Backup and rooting to save their phone state completely. Perhaps Android 4 (ICS) has a backup feature - the new phone has ICS on it, but I haven't gotten it yet.

Plume my preferred twitter client implemented the import/export and it made it so much easier with logging in since I have like 4 accounts lol

Would prefer import & export functionality above cloud synchronisation. That would also make it possible to have all the accounts including both user name and password.

ok but, How do they link the tapatalk cloud account with you? Do they use the google account? The IMEI's number? How do they know that you are the same person, what happens if you sell the phone to another one?
  16. ironblood Member

I believe they log something about your phone that makes it unique

We need a new driver this one's dead
  17. lagarde New Member

    But what's that something?

I guess Android ID which is unique ID based on handset & Google account.

How can this be if retrieves info to another phone, with a different unique ID?

You are not being clear at all.

You must wait for definitely answer from Tapatalk staff. Here the experienced users are just guessing what is the Tapatalk exactly doing.
